Why Kolkata is Special?
Kolkata, often called the City of Joy, has a unique rhythm that resonates with every visitor and resident. Its streets, culture, heritage, and food make it a dream destination for many across the country. My relationship with Kolkata has evolved over the years—from fleeting childhood memories to deeply personal experiences as an adult.
The first time I visited Kolkata, I was a child. My father, grandfather, and I stayed in a hotel where the red-carpeted floors and a small TV are the only fragments of memory I can recall. Another distinct memory was sitting on the city’s iconic hand-pulled rickshaw, a quintessential Kolkata experience. Over the years, my visits became more frequent, but it wasn’t until 2022 that Kolkata truly became my home.
When I moved from Delhi to Kolkata, my heart was heavy. The thought of leaving behind my familiar life made the transition difficult. The only thing I looked forward to was the famed Kolkata biryani. But now, as 2024 draws to a close, I’ve come to appreciate the city in ways I never expected.
The Small Joys of Kolkata
Mornings in Kolkata are a sensory delight. The steam rising from tea stalls mingles with the sounds of road sweepers and the sight of speeding yellow taxis. These everyday moments capture the city’s essence. Breakfasts of ghughni and kochuri have become my guilty pleasures, adding to my ever-growing love handles but also to my happiness.
Jorasanko, the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore, left me awestruck. Visiting this place made Tagore’s writings come alive, and I could almost see his childhood unfold in front of me. As someone who grew up immersed in Tagore’s ideology, this experience felt profoundly personal.
And then there’s Durga Puja—a festival that transforms Kolkata into a living, breathing canvas of art and devotion. Although I’m someone who prefers staying in during festivals, the grandeur and madness of Durga Puja left me spellbound. The city’s passion during this time is unmatched, and I couldn’t help but get swept up in the celebration.
A City That Shows Affection
What makes Kolkata truly special, though, is its warmth and affection. On my birthday, my landlord surprised me with homemade kheer, a gesture that touched me deeply—especially since many friends and acquaintances forgot the occasion.
In Kolkata, I’ve forged unexpected friendships, including one with someone who, though quirky, has been like a guardian to me. This city also witnessed my heartbreak when I fell in love and things didn’t work out. Yet, even in those lonely moments, Kolkata never felt unkind. Its streets, people, and resilience gave me the strength to move forward.
Work has also given me reasons to stay. The city’s charm lies not only in its iconic landmarks but also in the everyday interactions and experiences that make life here so meaningful.
The Undeniable Charm
Kolkata is a city of contradictions—a blend of the old and the new, chaos and calm, joy and melancholy. Its food, heritage, culture, and streets have a magnetic pull that’s hard to resist.
It’s a city that grows on you slowly, weaving itself into your life in unexpected ways. For me, Kolkata has become more than just a city—it’s a place that feels like home, with all its imperfections and wonders. And that, I think, is what makes Kolkata truly special.
